just a picture i like of a girl in bell bottom trousers

i love bell bottom trousers and big hair, although i'm glad i don't live in the 70's as i love my digital playthings even more. and, hey, i don't care about what's in fashion, i can still wear bell bottom trousers and have big hair.

Japanese illustrator Juko Shimizu

This first drawing called "Sweater Tree" is so large that it's been divided into parts. It's one of Juko Shimizu's more fine art oriented works. If you go see her homepage, make sure to check out her fine art section.

"This is an ongoing project since 2002 based on the concept of mixing my illustration and fine art backgrounds to come up with 'fake book illustrations that can only function as fine art". link

Most of Juko Shimizu's work is more commercial oriented illustration, but that doesn't make it any less interesting. An artist needs to eat, and being paid to draw is a good thing.

This first picture was my first encounter with Yuko Shimizu. I love it to bits. Someone had used it for a flyer I saw in Italy, but didn't mention the artist. Today I found it again by serendipity, and got the chance to see the rest of her work:

underwater fat

i can only imagine what it must be like to be that fat. it must be very soft and fluffy? if i was as fat as these underwater asses for a day, i would roll around on the floor for half an hour and cuddle my soft self, then go for a swim and take underwater pictures of myself, and after that i would probably spend the rest of the day on a diet.

mario ambrosius erotic doll art

why is there something pervy about dolls? is it because we can identify with the doll and see a fucked up version of ourselves in it(or of our partner)? a dead version, objectified and divided into parts; fetishised?? is it because of connotations with sex dolls for adults or the forbidden eroticism of childhood??? i really don't know, but here again is some cool erotic and unsettling doll art, this time by mario ambrosius . because dolls ARE unsettling, and that's what i like about them.

if you like this, you might want to check out my blog entry about some pervy doll art this artist seem to be very inspired by; hans bellmer's dolls.

bleak paintings by ken currie

scottish painter of the bleak, the dead and the ghostly.

he's got an effective technique going with the blue haloes around his subjects. it's not too hard to copy that effect with using a lot of blue in your background and fading the transitions, allthough i'm not saying that would instantly result in paintings like these.. it IS good though, for creating an eerie, cold glow.

look at him with his party finger going! i doubt that was what ken currie wanted me to get out of his painting, but hey, the artwork is only half created by the artist - the rest is created by the audience who views & interprets it..(and i clearly see a party finger). :
this last one is not a painting but a print:

my heart is neither broken or for sale

i wonder if the person munching on this chocolate heart that went on sale in tesco after valentines day had a date or not. and if not, if he or she saw the irony.

jan saudek

czech photographer jan saudek combines raw reality and dreamy imagination in a feast for the eyes. i like the way he adds colours to his photos, as well as the honest portrayal of the body, the strange sensuality and the humour in his work. i've tried to select a couple of saudek photos for this post, but there's too much to like for this to be brief.. so here is a "few" of my favourites:

if that wasn't enough for you, go see more of his work on the official jan saudek website.
