ganguro ( face-black) is an alternative fashion trend among young japanese women which peaked in popularity around the year 2000, but remains evident today.
yamanba and manba are terms often used to describe extreme practitioners of ganguro fashion. they feature darker tans and add white lipstick, pastel eye makeup, tiny metallic or glittery adhesives below the eyes, brightly-colored contact lenses, plastic dayglo-colored clothing, and incongruous accessories to the ganguro look.
the term yamanba derives from yama-uba, the name of a mountain hag in japanese folklore whom the fashion is thought to resemble. - wikipediain japan, pale skin is seen as being the most attractive, so when these girls get extreme tans and paint their faces black, they are rebels. and that makes me like them, no matter how wrong they may look. in fact, i LIKE wrong.
i'm glad the norm here in norway is being tanned. that way, i can say "fuck the mainstream!" while still staying attractively pale and free of wrinkles and other sun damage. not that i'd stop being pale if it became the norm, i just don't tan. and besides, going against the mainstream isn't a must to me - but it does feel nice! although i guess all sort of subcultures are mainstream within their own culture... .. it's hard work being a rebel.
i like her green hair matched with the pink top. green and pink is a strange combination.
