Music: Empire of the Sun

Nice tune, and I love the costumes, dancing and accompanying serious expressions in the video. It was recording during the day of the dead in Mexico.

My brother found this little gem of a video- I guess good taste in things runs in the family. Such a fantastic performance!

I've seen a film: Avatar

I woke up this morning with a feeling that I *had* to write a film review of Avatar, and so I did, even though I find it kind of strange that I had a feeling it was necessary.

When I first saw this picture of some blue elfin alien tribal girl in the newspaper I thought it was the most beautiful picture ever, and I was so excited that there would be an entire film just like that picture. As soon as I realized that Avatar was a Big Thing, I pretty soon grew tired of hearing about it. What? More than three people have heard about it? Fuck it, it's not underground enough for pretentious little me.. I don't want to be pretentious though, so I gave it a chance. Kind of.

When I went to see Avatar, I knew I'd love the visuals but suspected that the story would be full of things I'd complain about. And I was right.
Don't get me wrong, I LOVED the film and I even liked parts of the storyline, but I always have stuff to complain about, so here we go:

photographic silkscreen/vinyl by Barbara Kruger

Avatar is full of bad clichés.
Of course it takes an American white male to save the day, and of course he gets to sleep with the prettiest N'avi. And she's really pretty. I mean, it wouldn't have been the same if she looked like Walt Disney's Goofy or something. She's also tribal, kind of like a native, and in addition, animal-like. A blue version of The Other.

What seemed to me like the second half of the film was a really boring war sequence, with people running and chasing and doing battle stuff. My younger brother says this is the best part of the film. I think the best part of the film is where they just walk about and look at the pretty scenery, and explore the amazing ways the planet works.

In fact, I think Avatar would have been so much better if they skipped the storyline altogether and had more of the "ooh, look at that beautiful tree, it has glowing lights on it, and it's like a collective consciousness central thingy", "woha we can connect our neurons with animals!", "ooh and look at that pretty flower and that floating bit of land in the air, how weird and amazing, the world is a great place, and it's all connected, so lets take better care of it!".

It's a shame that I feel that the storyline doesn't live up to the visuals, as it's sort of annoying with something that is so close to being perfect, yet is not entirely perfect. It feels wrong to complain though, as Avatar is such a fantastic experience of lush beautiful imagery, and I'm glad I've filled my brain up with pretty pictures of imaginary alien botany from Pandora.

it is not sound

I love this music video by Ulver not only for the music but also because it's awesome to look at.

I've mostly been listening to Ulver's earlier music from back when they played black metal, and I'm not so familiar with their newer more experimental and electronic influenced music, but will have to listen through their CD's as I'm sure I'll love them. Isn't that just typical that a lot of bands who start out playing black metal start experimenting and end up doing electronic music?

all makt åt tengil!

"all makt åt tengil - vår befriare" translates to "all power to tengil - our liberator".

this is tengil:

he is the evil dictator who wants to enslave and rule all the people in the swedish film "bröderna lejonhjärta" - a film that all scandinavians are more than familiar with after seeing it countless times at school.

if tengil had motivational posters at his desk, i bet they would go something like this "arbeit macht frei"..

here are the main characthers, the two brothers skorpan and jonathan who have to fight against tengil. jeezus don't they look swedish, or what??:

in hindsight i can see why they made us see it so many times. even though it's a film for kids, it covers a lot of grown up themes like illness, death, tyranny, rebellion - and love, loyalty, hope, courage and pacifism. yet i didn't really care so much for that, and i still don't. my favourite part of the film is the same as it was when i was 10. the reason for why i'm writing this blog post is to share this scene:

ahh fantastic. you just witnessed tengil's dragon katla coming into battle. katla is shocking.
it's so great that they didn't care about their limitations in budget or special effect abilities, but went along and gave the dragon a major apperance anyway. and in my opinion, everything that makes this dragon crude, amateurish etc, makes it better, scarier - and more entertaining than polished hollywood effects could ever accomplish.

harder better faster stronger

i love how this girl dances! i like it when it's obvious that people are having fun when they dance - when they put all their energy into mad creative moves.

a bit of an update;

i was so excited when writing this blog entry(i just kept looking at the video) that i totally forgot to mention HOW the video was made. my boyfriend thinks it's clear for everyone to see, yet i didn't realise that there was some funky tricks going on till i saw a video of it on youtube.. apparently the girl is videotaped dancing all slow to the tune slowed down, and then it's been speeded up to sound normal and look like super-fast dancing moves. none the less impressive, me thinks. clever!

kokoro scan ♥

my friend lars sent me a link to this video over a year ago, and it's STILL my favourite. i've been looking for a good quality mp3 of this song so i can hear it on my mp3 player while on the bus/walking etc, but i haven't found it yet. my boyfriend has promised to make a hard techno version of it, sounds very promising, i can't wait!

this video is a commercial for a nintendo ds game. i have a nintendo ds, if i thought this game would give me defenite numerical values for people's feelings, i would certainly buy it. i'm sort of tempted to buy it anyway, except i bet it's all in japanese, and i think you'll have to TALK to it. the nintendo ds has a microphone, and i'm not really too keen on the talking bit. my brother bought me a baby pink(grr!!) nintendo ds with nintendogs for christmas one year, and i was eager to try my new game out when everyone had gone to bed. i chose a little chihuahua as my pet, and when asked to name him, i named him "cock". i played around with "cock" for a while, before i was asked to teach him his name. i had to say his name into the microphone so the nintendo ds would recognize it. i tried whispering but it wasn't loud enough, and when it was loud enough i didn't say it right. i had to repeat "cock" countless times to my bastard ds. it was sort of embarrassing as my mother and two brothers could probably hear me, and they had no idea i was talking to a digital chihuahua.

oh well. no hard feelings, i still love japan.
